Jews March for Pride! San Francisco Pride Parade 2009! : Inspired by our core Jewish value that every human being is created betzelem elohim, in the image of the divine, the Bay Area Jewish community organized to march in San Francisco's Annual Pride Parade Sunday, June 28. These are a few of our photos.

Together our contingent featured the overarching message: we are the Jewish community; we are diverse; we overwhelmingly support marriage equality. 600+ people (including over 60 Jewish groups & over 20 Rabbi's) joined us for the 1.5 mile march down market street ending at Civic Center.

Thank you to Dr. Rita Alfonzo for being our volunteer professional photographer for the day, http://tinyurl.com/MorePridePhotos and to the Eckstein family owners of the Beale Street Bar and Grill where we enjoyed a Kosher breakfast before the march.

Additionally, thank you, thank you, thank you: Rabbi James Brandt, Rabbi Sydney Mintz, Rachel Biale, Margee Churchon, Paul Cohn, Jacob Goldstein, Karen Bluestone, Kol Tzedek, JCRC, Carrie Rice, Progressive Jewish Alliance, Joy Powers, Ken Kramarz, Rabbi Doug Kahn, Congregation Sha'ar Zahav, Eytan Elterman, Congregation Rodef Shalom, Susan Krauss, Temple Sinai of Oakland, Congregation Emanu-El, Roxanne Cohen, Denise Ron, Maxine Epstein, Jessica Trubowitch, Kim Carter, Jasmine Blanchard, Mike Yaminsky, Lital Carmel, Roberta Brooks, Meryl Klein, Judith Shmueli, Jacob & Jeremy Elliott, Sister Shameless, Marty and Meagan Fox, Marty Rawlings-Fein, Rabbi Marv Goodman, Dr. Donny Inbar, Nancy Brunn, Vanessa Eissman, Lynne Belmont… trust us, it took the whole community to get us together and this is only the partial list. LGBT Senior Thanksgiving Lunch : Goal: Provide an engagement opportunity for LGBT Seniors (people of a matured age, retired adults & elders) and their friends of all ages sexual orientations, religions and gender identities as well as vegans, vegetarians and volunteers to celebrate Thanksgiving together.

Where & When: Osher Marin's Jewish Community Center's Hoyt Theater (200 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael 94903) on Wednesday, November 18, 12:00 - 2:00pm

Who attended: 65 LGBT Seniors + a City Council member, a few local elder-care professionals from organizations like the Hospice center, SF JCF and OM JCC staff & Spectrum Board Members…

Co-Sponsoring Organizations & Cost: $270 from the LGBT Alliance of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, The Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties.& the Osher Marin's Jewish Community Center donated the Hoyt Theater for this purpose for free.

Program Background: Paula Pilecki, Executive Director of Spectrum LGBT Center Serving Marin & Sonoma Counties was the coordinator and creator of the program. She put the program together in two weeks after realizing that the Spectrum office would be too small to host their annual Thanksgiving pot-luck for Seniors. She also wanted to enhance the program and make it a more friend-making event for seniors without stress and with good food. Paula decided to have the lunch catered to encourage a more healthy and tasty meal. Founded in 1982, Spectrum provides community leadership to promote acceptance, understanding, and full inclusion for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. Spectrum offers a host of outreach programs including Senior Spectrum (http://www.spectrumlgbtcenter.org/Programs.htm#senior) which provides opportunities for LGBT older adult men and women to come together for socializing, support, and community. Senior Spectrum also provides resources and referral as well as education and advocacy to help create LGBT-friendly services in Marin and Sonoma counties.

A few extra details: Reservations were required via pilecki@spectrumlgbtcenter.org a suggested donation of $10 was requested (you could pay in advance (http://tinyurl.com/LGBTSenior) by using PayPal) but we did not turn anyone away for a lack of funds. Joelle Yuna, a Spectrum supporter, did the underwriting for a portion of the lunch expenses at $250.00. This donation allowed the cost to go from $15 down to $10 a person. The traditional fixings Thanksgiving lunch was catered & served by Stacy Scott Fine Catering with the help of volunteers. They served: Turkey, Rolls, Stuffing, Vegan Squash with lentil salad inside, Salads, Veggies & Mash potatoes. Beverages and dessert were provided by Spectrum that included: Vegan Apple Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Cookies, Coffee, Apple Juice & Soda Water. Michelle Sell, Harpist performed throughout and on the tables were simple decorations and a list of the sponsors.

Thoughts for next year: It would be lovely to have a Jewish community group host the Kiddush, the Hebrew blessing over the fruit of the vine, juices or wine, and Hamotzi, the Hebrew blessing over bread and have everyone participate adding more Jewish or spiritual content. Additionally, it would be lovely if these blessings were interfaith specific adding prayers for all people…maybe look at a pluralistic, secular, LGBT inclusive prayer or text…
