sfjcf  > LGBT > LGBT Alliance Jewish Community Hero Coming Out Day 2011
In 1994, Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, believed a month should be dedicated to the celebration and teaching of gay and transgender (LGBT) history. He gathered other teachers and community leaders together to make it happen. These leaders collectively selected October as the month to do this work because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur that month.

GLBT History Month was quickly endorsed by GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Education Association, and other national LGBT organizations. In 2006, Equality Forum began providing content, promotion and resources for LGBT History Month to encourage its continuation via social networks. With the leadership of Equality Forum our National LGBT History Month now celebrates the achievements of 31 lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) Icons each day during the month of October. This is a selection of 19 LGBT Jewish icons that have been honored among the 186 LGBT Icons chosen to be listed since 2006.
